Upcycle Style Challenge 

This year's student challenge invites you to give pre-loved garments new life by reimagining them into modern, stylish looks. Whether you source from thrift stores or from the depths of your own closet, we encourage you to dig into the potential of forgotten pieces. Take risks, experiment with textile manipulations, and breathe fresh perspective into what already exists. Most importantly, have fun with the process! This is a chance to make sustainability stylish by showing your peers that upcycling is not only good for the planet, but can produce innovative fashion. We can’t wait to see the boundary-pushing potential of these undeserved garments when placed in the hands of young, inspired designers like you. Unleash your creativity and register today!

Student Eligibility:

This competition is open to students aged 16 and over who are currently enrolled in a high school, college/university, technical/vocational program, or other qualified educational course related to fashion, design, textiles, business, or a relevant field of study. This includes but is not limited to programs focused on fashion design, apparel production, textile design, merchandising, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Students in both part-time and full-time programs are eligible. Applicants under the age of 18 must have parental/guardian approval to participate.

By submitting this Intent to Enter registration, you are reserving your spot(s) to participate in the 2024 Student Challenge upcycling competition. You may register up to 3 entries for the $10 fee per entry. 

After registration closes, you will receive a unique 3-digit Entry Number for each of your entries which you will use to identify your completed submissions. Please add [email protected] to your safe list and retain your Entry Number(s)!

You will then have until August 15, 2024 to finish your upcycled garment(s), take photos, and submit your official entries through the Challenge Submission Form using your provided Entry Number(s). This registration reserves your place while giving you time to ideate and construct your entries over the summer before the final deadline.

Entering a garment in the Student Challenge allows you to request up to 2 free fashion show tickets. Additional tickets may be purchased at a 50% discount while quantities last. More information will be sent after confirmation of entry.

Finalist garments will be presented at the ASDP Conference Fashion Show on Friday, October 25th. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place winning garments.
